What is a viewfinder?

A viewfinder is an optical or electronic aid for image composition. Depending on the type, it shows you the approximate or exact section that the camera will capture.

What types of search engines are there?

Common search types include:

Frame viewfinder : shows the image area through a window (often found on compact or viewfinder cameras)
Viewfinder : simple optical lenses without guide lines
Sports viewfinder : on older cameras, two frames for quick orientation
Clip-on viewfinder : external, e.g. for wide-angle or special lenses

Why are there external search engines?

Some cameras don't have a built-in viewfinder – for example, early plate cameras or 35mm bodies with interchangeable lenses. An external viewfinder helps to accurately frame the shot nonetheless.

What do I use a clip-on viewfinder for?

For cameras without their own viewfinder or when using special lenses (e.g., wide-angle). The viewfinder is attached to the hot shoe or mounted separately.

How accurate is an optical viewfinder?

Optical viewfinders usually don't show the exact image area – especially in close-up shots, parallax shifts can occur. With a little practice, these can be estimated fairly accurately.

Are there electronic viewfinders available as a retrofit option?

How do we classify the optical state?

Our used viewfinders are manually inspected before being sold and classified into the following condition categories:

Good: Light to normal signs of wear. The lens is clear, though minor dust inclusions are possible.
Acceptable: Significant signs of wear such as dull spots or cloudiness are acceptable; functionality remains intact.
Defect: Significantly restricted or unusable visibility. For spare parts or decorative purposes.

How do we test the viewfinders?

Please note: Minor visual imperfections such as dust or scratches in the viewing window are normal for older devices and do not necessarily affect their use.
